In the fall of 1991 the U.S. Dept. of Interior designated Monroe School as a National Historic Landmark. On October 26, 1992, President Bush signed the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site Act of 1992 establishing this school as a national park. The Brown v. Board National Historic Site was dedicated and opened May 17, 2004. Take an online tour of the National Historic Site.
The Topeka Capital-Journal printed articles on January 16, 1996 and February 24, 1996 discussing efforts to clean up Monroe School and open it to the public as a National Historic Site.
The National Park Service has handout describing the Monroe School National Historic Site.
