PRESERVING THE PAST AND BUILDING THE FUTURE...
The Brown Foundation was established as a living tribute to the attorneys and plaintiffs in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision of 1954, Brown v. the Board of Education. This decision signaled the end of legal segregation on the basis of race in this country. The mission of the Foundation is to improve the quality of life for individuals and strengthen our overall sense of community by furthering educational equity and multicultural understanding.
YOUR MEMBERSHIP CONTRIBUTION SUPPORTS ANNUAL PROGRAMS
Teacher education scholarships
The scholarships are designed to fill the "educational pipeline" with minorities interested in becoming classroom teachers. With the decline in federal support for education, scholarships have emerged as an effective strategy to develop future educational leaders.
Symposium
The symposium brings educators, researchers and policymakers together to examine social, political and economic issues that affect education; and to search for solutions to achieve educational equity and excellence.
National Park partners
The Foundation assists and supports the National Park Service with plans, preservation and interpretation of Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site and other related sites.
Reading program
The program uses readers and story tellers to introduce children ages 3 through 8 to books and stories with multicultural themes. The goal is to help children appreciate and understand race and ethnic diversity.
Research
The Foundation offers financial support to scholars who design and complete original research and extend earlier research on educational equity, excellence and student achievement.
Newsletter
The Brown Quarterly is a newsletter designed to introduce classroom teachers to curricular resources from our National Parks. It features teacher innovations and a review of multicultural children's books.
