Following the period of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) many Mexicans migrated north in search of better opportunities in the United States. Many migrated to Kansas, finding work with the railroads and settling in urban centers like Topeka. By 1930, a sizable Mexican American population existed in Kansas.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, an exhibit featuring the original artwork of Topeka artists Joey Rocha and Andy Valdivia will open at Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site. The original paintings, murals, and collages depict family histories and stories of migration from Mexico to Topeka. Finding work, raising families, and building communities in Topeka are part of these local stories.
